A dedication to community service runs strong in the Third family, from Dunedin. So strong in fact that all four of them, teenagers included, are sacrificing watching rugby to work for St John in Dunedin during the Rugby World Cup.

The family are all working or volunteering for the organisation.

During each Dunedin match dad Doug, St John's South Island operations support manager, can be found in the operations centre at Dunedin Central Police Station, overseeing St John's emergency response.

Mum Nicky, a former St John employee, is based at Otago Stadium, running St John communications as a volunteer there, but works from a window-less room.

Daughter Georgia is volunteering as an administrator based at St John's offices in York Pl, and son Cameron is a volunteer logistics officer based at an operations forward point at the Central Dunedin Fire Station.

With 73 years' service to St John between them, they were happy to be able to provide that expertise for the tournament, Mr Third said.

The funny thing was, while their whole attention was on the RWC during each local match, none of his family would get to see the game live, he said.
