The Otago Regional Council is going to take its desks with it when it moves into its new building.

When contacted by the Otago Daily Times following inaccurate reports of the council getting rid of brand new work desks, council chief executive Richard Saunders said the council had not disposed of any desks at this stage.

"A key priority is to re-purpose as many desks as we can into the new building and around the region before considering disposal. For clarity, our current desks can be moved into our new head office," he said.

The reuse/resizing of 155 existing desks, which was well under way, would cost $35,478.

This was compared to an estimated $105,702 - a figure based on lowest market price as at August - had the council purchased new desks.

He said 85 desks were already at correct size and would be transferred to the new building.

“The desk resizing project aims to reduce waste and save money.

"We’re being mindful of the expectation best value must be sought for all services on behalf of ORC ratepayers; in this case a saving of at least $70,000,” he said.

In September, during preparations for the upcoming move. the council donated three fixed corner desks, which were not sit-to-stand and were slightly damaged, to a local volunteer organisation.

The council was yet to confirm when it would be moving into the its new building at Maclaggan St.
