It may be more than 50 years since he helped form one of the greatest bands of all time, but last night Roger Waters showed Dunedin he still knows how to rock.

The 74-year-old founding member of Pink Floyd played his solo concert, Us + Them, at Forsyth Barr Stadium last night, his only South Island appearance.

In front of about 15,000 fans of all ages, Waters performed some of Pink Floyd's greatest hits and also songs from his newest album, Is This the Life We Really Want?.

Throughout the show a huge screen projected images set to the theme of the song he was performing.

The biggest cheer of the night was for Pink Floyd hits Wish You Were Here and Another Brick in the Wall, during which children from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Otakou Marae joined Waters on stage.

They wore prison clothing, removing their hoods during the line ''we don't need no education'', which drew a roar from the crowd.

Waters told the audience they should be very proud of the children, whom he had met for the first time earlier in the day.

Last night's performance occasionally became overtly political with giant images of Donald Trump flashing and army drones appearing on the big screen.

Towards the end of the show a giant inflatable pig with US President Trump's face on the side was launched and hovered near the crowd.

A laser show and giant inflatable moon capped off the show.

Last night was the start of a run of big concerts for Dunedin's stadium this year with Robbie Williams on February 17, three concerts by Ed Sheeran on March 29, 31 and April 1, and Pink on September 1.
