Driver `barely conscious'

Dunedin motorists may have saved a woman's life yesterday after forcing her to stop her car after she was seen swerving on to the wrong side of the road, and finding her in a semi-conscious state.

Senior Sergeant Bruce Ross, of Dunedin, said police received numerous calls about a car being driven erratically in the St Kilda and Andersons Bay area, about 4.45pm.

The car was seen crossing to the wrong side of the road, narrowly missing parked cars and hitting the kerb in some places.

Two concerned motorists managed to make the woman stop on Musselburgh Rise and found her in her car, "barely conscious", he said.

It turned out the woman was a diabetic and had "dangerously low" blood sugar levels.

A St John ambulance was called and the woman was taken to hospital.

Snr Sgt Ross praised the actions of the motorists who stopped the woman, as well as others who rang and reported her erratic driving.
