A group of musicians was drumming up support for a devastated Japanese town at the Dunedin Railway Station on Saturday.

The Otago Koto Emsemble and O-Taiko Drumming Group held an outdoor concert to raise funds for the earthquake and tsunami-affected town of Minamisanriku in Japan.

The O-Taiko Drumming Group was established at the University of Otago in 2010 by former-music department head Prof Henry Johnson, organiser Kana Imuta said.

"He had a really strong desire to start taiko. We originally mainly played at Asian festivals and events like Chinese New Year, but we're starting to really get exposed to a lot more things now," Ms Imuta said.

"Taiko is very common at festivals in Japan. It's a must-have at festivals there. It's a form of music and art. It combines sound and the dynamics of movement ... It's a loud noise and quite an aerobic exercise."

The group will perform at the opening of the redeveloped Toitu Otago Settlers Museum and at the University of Otago graduation ceremony in the Regent Theatre on December 15.
