A busy day weeding the dunes and planting pingao sand-binding vegetation at Victory Beach was had by Yellow-eyed Penguin Trust field manager David McFarlane (foreground) and (from left) volunteer Monika Fry, trustee Lala Frazer, Doc biodiversity ranger Mel Young, and Otago Girls' High School pupils Phoebe Morrison (14) and Rosie Sullivan (14).

The volunteers' dune restoration work marked the start of national Seaweek.

Mr McFarlane said six people had planted 100 of the sand-binding plants, also known as golden sand sedge, in the Okia Reserve on Saturday.

Lala Frazer, a founding member of the trust, also gave a talk about the history of the area.

Mr McFarlane said Seaweek was a "great way to raise awareness" about the sea, which was clearly important for New Zealand and its citizens but still under-appreciated.
