Dunedin set for 25degC afternoon

Dunedin  will be the hottest place in Otago today but the heat will only stay for a day, Niwa says.

Forecaster Ben Noll said warm northwesterly winds were forecast for parts of the eastern South Island today.

The ``toasty winds'' were tracking from eastern Australia. Dunedin would be cloudy this morning but the wind would ``scour the cloud out'' before temperatures reached 25degC early this afternoon.

``It'll get pretty toasty ... it'll feel like summer.''

Dunedin was forecast to be the warmest place in Otago today but he doubted the highest temperature would beat the spring record set last month - 26.2degC on October 17.

However, a southerly wind change was forecast to hit Otago overnight and end the ``summery warmth'', with Dunedin residents waking to a day about 5degC cooler.

``It won't be a frigid winter-like day, but not as warm as it had been.''
