Enjoying a taste of home

Enjoying a barbecue, Syrian-style, at Woodhaugh Gardens in Dunedin yesterday are (from left) Malak Akkam, Waeel Esbinati (15), Sarieh Esbinati and Hanan Akkam.

All refugees from Aleppo, they arrived in Dunedin about 2 years ago. They spent yesterday afternoon frying flat bread on the public barbecues at the gardens. The bread was then smothered in za’atar and offered around.

The area was packed with families enjoying a picnic and children enjoying a paddling pool. Logan Park High School pupil Waeel said the family members were having a great day out in the sun.
