The free show, at the Beverly Begg Observatory at Robin Hood Park, Dunedin, is one of a series of activities marking the Dunedin Astronomical Society's centenary this year. It opens to the public from 10am to 4pm from today until next Sunday, and then continues from 7pm-9pm, from October 18-22.
The show includes a touring display of 32 photographs of heavenly bodies taken by amateur astronomers throughout New Zealand and co-ordinated by the Southland Astronomical Society.
About 20 more astronomical photographs taken by members of the Dunedin society are also on display, together with other images reflecting highlights in the society's history, and showing the strong contribution made by Dunedin astronomers, including John Turnbull Thomson (1821-84).
Mr Thomson was the Dunedin-based chief surveyor of the Otago Province (1856-73), later becoming surveyor-general of New Zealand (1876-79).
