Parents looking for support during the lesser-known "fourth trimester" had a place to pick the brains of many of Dunedin’s postpartum experts.

On Saturday, the PostnatalME Expo was back in town at the Forsyth Barr stadium with a record number of people attending.

Plunket community services co-ordinator Tina Mangos said the expo was in its fifth year.

"We’ll keep going for as long as we can keep it going ... the more information we can get out to parents and families, the better."

As part of their fifth anniversary, they handed out awards for the vendors that had been with them for the past five years, as well as some who had been with them for the past four.

The expo was aimed at new and expectant mothers and their wider whānau, Ms Mangos said.

Sometimes it was about finding out what to expect postpartum, and sometimes it was just so people knew they were not alone in the struggles they may face as parents.

"It started off with Caren Van Gastel from Empower Me Fitness and Consulting when she was first a mum many years ago.

"She thought ‘gosh after you have a baby, your body has so many different changes, it is quite an upheaval’."

Ms Van Gastel then reached out to her Plunket nurse and the expo was born.

The day featured guest speakers from a range of organisations and support services in Dunedin, and the event would not be possible without a community grant from Dunedin Venues.

This year was the expo’s largest turnout yet, with about 120 people registering to attend.

New parents Rachel and Zac Kim attended with their 6-month-old son Zion.

Mrs Kim said they saw it advertised online and thought it would be good to go along and hopefully pick up some tips.

"Mums go through a lot. This is a first for me, so it’s helpful so see what support there is around."

She had recently got in touch with Empower Me Fitness and Consulting because she wanted to get back into exercise postpartum.

"I was looking for a place to get back into it, but with Bubs, I was wondering how would I do that."
