This heavy rock, about 1m long, fell down a steep bank and landed in the middle of State Highway 88, Dunedin, north of the Forsyth Barr Stadium, about 4.20pm yesterday.

NZ Transport Agency maintenance contract manager, coastal, Nic Rodger said the rock was cleared shortly after it fell on to the highway, about 100m east of Parry St.

Mr Rodger said that he and an NZTA crew were monitoring the rock wall "for the time being".

There had been occasional falls of single rocks in the area in the past, triggered by rain, he said.
