The wait is nearly over.
Dunedin and Wanaka will find out this evening if they have been successful in their bid to become Gigatown New Zealand.
Other towns still in the running are Gisborne, Nelson and Timaru.
Gigatown Dunedin promoter Josh Jenkins said five Dunedin representatives, including himself and Mayor Dave Cull, would attend an announcement by Chorus in Wellington, at 6pm today.
The event would be streamed live on www.gigatown.co.nz
Mr Jenkins said Gigatown Dunedin staff had worked hard to win the competition, and he was pleased with the city's response to the challenge.
''The campaign has gone really, really well ... people are collaborating in a way I've never seen or experienced in this city,'' Mr Jenkins said.
''I'm stoked. Win or lose, everyone is thinking about our future - using the internet to collaborate - from little old Dunedin.''
Gigatown Wanaka campaign manager Kelly Good said yesterday the Wanaka team ''still definitely think we are in the running''.
''We are just looking forward to having that decision made,'' Ms Good said.
''As far as we are concerned, as a community, we have certainly punched well above our weight.
''We've had a phenomenal engagement with our entire community and more.
''So, we're pretty proud of what we have done, given the parameters under which we have been playing.''
Representing Wanaka in Wellington tonight will be Ms Good, Alistair King, Arna Craig, Adam Feeley and Lyal Cocks.
The announcement of the winner will be streamed live to a function at Wanaka's Gin and Raspberry Bar from 6pm.
The final category involves each finalist town creating a ''Plan for Gig Success''.
This was a written submission and video summary describing how each town plans to activate the economic and social benefits of town-wide access to gigabit fibre.
The points from the final category are worth 50% of the competition total.
The competition was launched by Chorus in October 2013 with 50 cities and towns across New Zealand competing to become the country's first Gigatown.
That would mean access to much faster internet speeds - one gigabit per second internet connection - at the price normally paid for entry level broadband.
