An Otago family with more than 150 years of history in the province finally got around to bringing the family together.

The Dick family, which traces its origins in Dunedin to the settlement of Peter and Isabella Dick in September 1859, held its first reunion on Saturday at the Otago Golf Club.

More than 100 family members made the trip from as far afield as Snells Beach, north of Auckland, and Invercargill for the reunion.

''I produced a genealogy report two years ago of the whole family and from others reading that it was decided to have a family reunion,'' reunion organiser Janet Crombie said.

''There's never been a Dick family reunion before.

''It's just a really nice family occasion.''

In addition to the formal gathering at the golf club, the family yesterday attended a service at the First Church of Otago; Peter and Isabella had attended the church after settling in the city.

The family then unveiled a restored headstone at the family's burial plot in the Southern Cemetery.

Mrs Crombie said four generations of the family gathered for the weekend's events. The eldest was 78 and the youngest just 19 months old.

''I'm very pleased with the turnout and pleased with the day,'' she said.

''It's very cool to see relations that we just don't get to see.''
