Residents close to the Green Island landfill are being told it is safe to go outside after smoke from a fire at the site prompted warnings for them to stay indoors this morning.
Fire crews have extinguished a fire at the Brighton Rd site, Dunedin City Council spokesman Jamie Shaw said.
The fire was "deep seated" and diggers were being used to move landfill debris away from the fire, Otago Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Stephanie Rotarangi said.
Smoke from the fire had eased and it was safe for residents to go outside.
Fire Service southern communications shift manager Andrew Norris said they received a call about the fire at 3.20am.
Residents were advised for a time to keep their windows and doors closed, and to stay indoors.
