Footpath condition deemed dangerous

A concerned resident wants the Dunedin City Council to make a Mosgiel footpath safer before someone gets hurt.

Alistair Finnie, of Mosgiel, asked Mosgiel Taieri Community Board members last week for help to get the DCC to make a section of footpath in Berwick St safer.

A developer had subdivided a property in the street in late 2013 and heavy traffic serving the subdivision had ''destroyed'' a section of the footpath.

''Not only is it an unsafe surface but the water ponds,'' he told the board.

The footpath had been ''hijacked'' by the property developer, he said.

The footpath was in a ''dangerous state'' and elderly residents using walking frames could injure themselves when walking over the damaged path.

''If they get on unstable ground they are at risk of falling.''

Mr Finnie said he had been in ''dialogue'' with the council about the condition of the path since September last year but it had been in vain, he said.

''I've dealt with the council for eight months and got nowhere.''

Board chairman Bill Feather thanked Mr Finnie for highlighting the issue to the board.

''It's not a pretty issue to bring to our notice, but now that you have, we will look into it on your behalf.''
