Mark Egginton became a very convincing Jedi master and was getting by with a little help from his friends at the Edge of the World Expo at the weekend.

English-born Mr Egginton, of Invercargill, is a member of the Rebel Legion, an international fan-based volunteer organisation dedicated to making and wearing costumes of the Star Wars heroes, the Rebel Alliance.

He was pleased to be working to raise money for Camp Quality, the children’s family cancer charity, through the Expo.

And, for a good cause, he was also happy to be appearing and performing with several friends from other parts of the country, who play the roles of Star Wars villains.

They are members of the New Zealand Garrison of the worldwide Star Wars costuming group, the 501st Legion.

This group wears the costumes of stormtroopers, bounty hunters and other villains from the Star Wars films, but members also devote much of their time towards helping charities.

Dunedin’s first charity expo dedicated to creating awareness and appreciation of everything from pop culture, cosplay and sci-fi to anime is now in its second year.

The latest event ended at the Edgar Centre yesterday.

Organiser Rory Foley said on Saturday that the expo was attracting many visitors, and he was "really happy" with the enthusiastic community response.

The number of stallholders had more than doubled, from 23 to 53, and the latest expo was bigger and more interactive than before, Mr Foley said.
