The former garden bar at Captain Cook Tavern has been demolished, but the building's owners are yet to decide what will go in its place.

Greg Paterson, one of three directors of Orari Street Properties Investments Ltd which owns the building, said the garden bar area was not going to be part of a smaller Captain Cook Tavern, to reopen this year.

"It was too big and a bit old and untidy, so we just wanted to tidy it up.''

In the meantime, the site could be used as a car park.

"We are just going to get [the reopening] finished first and see what happens later.''

The venue, a popular drinking spot for Dunedin's student population, was founded in 1860 and closed in June 2013.

The garden bar was demolished by contractors earlier this week.
