Four men were arrested after armed police stopped a car in North Dunedin early yesterday and allegedly found methamphetamine worth up to $42,000 and $7500 cash.

Police stopped the car about 4.30am in Castle St.

Detective Senior Sergeant Malcolm Inglis said the drug was destined for Southland and was estimated to have a street value of between $28,000 and $42,000.

Police believe the drug had been sourced from the upper North Island and say it would have caused considerable harm had it made it to the streets.

''Police will continue to be relentless in targeting illegal activity such as this. The gains made through these kinds of activities are at the expense of the welfare of our communities, and our young people,'' Det Snr Sgt Inglis said.

The four men, dealt with by registrar's adjournment at the Dunedin District Court, were remanded in custody by consent to tomorrow, with interim name suppression until then.

They were charged jointly with possessing the class A controlled drug methamphetamine for supply, at Dunedin yesterday.

Two of the men, aged 25 and 49, are from Invercargill. The other two are 33-year-olds, one from Edendale and the other from Hamilton.
