Frew wins both races in speed weekend

A man dubbed the "fastest man around Otago" did what he was good at and took home two back-to-back wins during a weekend of hill climb car-racing events.

The Otago Sports Car Club hosted its annual Property Brokers Mosgiel Speed Weekend, where competitors raced in hill climbs up Whare Flat Rd and Three Mile Hill Rd.

The overall winner was Dunedin man Glenn Frew, the "fastest man around Otago".

Both roads were closed for the event.

Otago Sports Car Club president and event organiser Cory Saxton said the weekend, particularly the second day, received more entries than usual, with 25 on the first day and 40 on the second.

"That was a refreshing change from low entry numbers at the last few events," he said.

The entire weekend had gone by smoothly.

"There were no dramas at all, no crashes and no breakdowns — we like it when everyone takes their cars home in one piece."

Saturday’s race went up Whare Flat Rd, which was a gravel-based race, whereas yesterday’s race up Three Mile Hill Rd was a race on tarseal.

Frew won both races, with times of 2min 24.34sec and 1min 17.67sec, respectively.

He won while driving different Mitsubishi Evos — one equipped for gravel, the other for a tarsealed track, Mr Saxton said.

"Glenn dominates most things and he's our current speed champion — fastest man around Otago."

Feedback Mr Saxton received said the day was great and the event attracted quite a few spectators.

"There was a heap of people at the Taieri lookout area halfway up the road. Everyone had a good time."
