Fringers invited to 2011 event

Applications are being invited from performance artists to participate in the 2011 Dunedin Fringe Festival.

Festival director Paul Smith said the eighth festival would feature 300 artists from New Zealand and overseas performing for a Dunedin audience of more than 11,000 people.

"The Dunedin Fringe is a wonderful opportunity for artists to present new work to a large and enthusiastic audience.

It is also an opportunity for artists to innovate and experiment - two elements that are critical to any fringe festival," Mr Smith said.

"The funding that we have available for participating artists is targeted at these two core values.

Artists can apply to us to develop and present cutting edge art as part of the festival.

"To have the best chance of success artists should apply for festival funding and a festival hub venue."

Inquiries had been received from artists in Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Adelaide and Berlin, Mr Smith said.

"As an open-access festival, the sky is the limit at the Dunedin Fringe - any artist can do anything.

"I encourage artists to get in touch with us or come along to one of our artist registration meetings to be held in Dunedin, Christchurch and Auckland.

"The registration deadline is not that far away."

The 2011 Fringe Festival will be held from March 17-27.
