Dunedin police are investigating another alleged sexual assault in the city - the fourth reported in the past week - and have issued safety advice to women going out at night.

Police yesterday closed the file on one of three sexual attacks reported earlier after establishing an incident in Blacket Lane, near George St, last Saturday did not occur as was first reported.

Detective Senior Sergeant Steve McGregor, of Dunedin, said in the latest incident a 16-year-old girl reported she was sexually assaulted in Macandrew Rd, South Dunedin, about 3am yesterday.

She told police she was walking with another female, but was attacked soon after they parted company.

Police conducted a forensic examination of the scene yesterday morning, but declined to say exactly where the assault took place.

The victim contacted police at 3.20am and was taken to Dunedin Hospital for treatment soon after. She was not injured in the assault.

Two males - one Caucasian, one Maori - believed to be aged 17-20 are thought to be involved.

Details of the incident were still sketchy, Det Snr Sgt McGregor said.

"We don't have a clear identification of the suspect from the victim at this stage."

Police were still to interview her fully.

"At this stage, there is nothing to indicate that it was a violent attack.

"It is also not known if the victim knows the identity of the alleged offender."

He said none of the this week's sexual assaults were connected. However, in most of the cases, excessive alcohol consumption was a contributing factor.

"In any of these situations, where people are out in the public late at night and been drinking alcohol, they've got to consider their personal safety at all times.

"For example, don't be alone in unlit difficult areas. Let people know where you are going, and don't consume alcohol to the extent that you don't have control over your faculties.

"In a number of the cases that we have had in recent times, alcohol has been a significant factor in the victim being placed in a difficult situation. It is a concerning factor."

Det Snr Sgt McGregor declined to comment on whether the latest victim was intoxicated, where she had been before the assault or where she was going.

Police are still hunting for a man linked to an alleged sexual assault last weekend in which a woman in her 20s reported she was attacked by a man in a South Rd, Dunedin, house about 5.30am on Sunday after he walked her and a friend to the address.

On Wednesday, a 54-year-old foreign national was arrested following the alleged sexual violation of a 29-year-old Dunedin woman at the Leviathan Hotel the previous evening.

The man has been remanded in custody until February 9.

Det Snr Sgt McGregor said no charges would be laid in relation to the Blacket Lane attack. He thanked the public for their help and said people should be reassured all complaints of a sexual nature were taken seriously.

"I would encourage all victims of such offences to report them to the police."

He urged anyone with information about any of the other attacks to contact the police.
