Participants (from left) Craig Thomas (19), of Dunedin, Benjamin Frew (21), of Auckland, and Finn Luxton (20), of Dunedin, worked together yesterday to create a computer game from scratch as part of the international Global Game Jam held in Dunedin at the University of Otago.

At 5pm Friday, New Zealand participants were the first in the world to start on the challenge, which had the theme of "waves".

Mr Luxton said the trio were working hard to iron out all the technical details within 48 hours.

About 20 people took part in Dunedin. Developed in California by a non-profit organisation, the game jam’s goal is to foster design through collaboration.
