Dunedin father Rob Fehsenfeld knows his daughter Daryl-Ann has a mountain to climb, so yesterday he tackled one of his own.

Four-year-old Daryl-Ann has been battling severe cerebral palsy, cortical blindness and epilepsy since a "mismanaged" birth, leaving her unable to walk, talk or feed herself.

Her parents have opted for expensive and experimental stem cell therapy, first in Mexico in 2009, aimed at improving her quality of life.

They were now facing another $45,000 bill for another month of intensive treatment in the United States in October.

To help pay the bill, Mr Fehsenfeld decided to climb Baldwin St yesterday as part of a fundraising drive for his daughter's care.

He made yesterday's climb to the top not once, but 27 times non-stop over the course of the day, and all while carrying a 23kg pack on his back.

The effort aimed to emulate a climb to the top of Mt Everest, the world's tallest peak at 8848m, while carrying the heaviest pack a guided climber would be expected to, he said.

The climb took him from 10am until 4pm, and he told the Otago Daily Times afterwards he was "shattered" but happy.

"It was very hard ... But when I saw the people there, and I saw my daughter smiling at me, I thought I could soldier on all day. I would do anything for that girl."

Members of the Dunedin police, Mosgiel Volunteer Fire Brigade, Dunedin businesses and the public collected sponsorship money, made donations and took turns climbing with him.

Daryl-Ann's mother, Janine Bolton, hoped the event would add $5000 to the $30,000 raised since July last year.
