Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium, a school, a church and a small weekend retreat are among 17 homes and buildings whose architects have been recognised in the Southern Architecture Awards.
Winners in six categories ranging from public buildings to heritage redevelopments were announced at a function in Invercargill last night.
The high number of entries and the high standard of winners were signs that the region's architects were "doing good work in difficult times", jury panel convener and Invercargill architect Brent Knight said.
"We were impressed by some significant community and public buildings and found that this was also a very strong year for residential architecture."
In the public buildings category, the jury praised stadium designers Jasmax, Richard Breslin and Populous for their skill in dealing with a demanding process and a complex project involving a large team.
McCoy and Wixon Architects was also recognised for its transformation of the University of Otago's Robertson Library building in Union St from "an ageing institutional structure to a revitalised library".
Dunedin architect Ian Butcher won the heritage category for his work on the restoration of Oamaru's North Otago Club building, built in 1871.
The architects of eight homes were recognised in the residential category.
The winning southern projects will go forward to the 2012 New Zealand Architecture Awards.
