Governor-General Sir Anand Satyanand officially opened Habitat for Humanity's ReStore shop in Dunedin yesterday.

The store is a joint venture between Habitat for Humanity and the Malcam Charitable Trust.

Sir Anand, the patron of Habitat, said hearing of the community spirit and social enterprise behind the new store put a "most wonderful amount of wind into my sail" and was part of what made New Zealand so special.

A key link to the success of such projects was the "glue of the spirit of volunteerism", he said.

The store sold donated goods including furniture and homeware with profits going back into the two organisations.

In the last day of his three-day visit to Dunedin, Sir Anand also opened Otago Polytechnic's Manaaki Block and visited Habitat's housing project in Ashmore St, the 13th Habitat house in the city.
