Group not opposed to supermarket if conditions met

A Mosgiel lobby group says it will accept a proposed Countdown supermarket as long as conditions are met.

A submission on the proposed development by the group of 25 Mosgiel residents, who called themselves Positively Progressive Taieri, had been listed as opposing the supermarket by Dunedin City Council staff.

However, member Brian Johnson said the group supported the development as long as traffic, parking and other issues were adequately addressed.

''We all accept that it's going to be there, and we all believe it will enhance the neighbourhood, but we just want to make sure it adds value and not devalues,'' he said.

Members of the group had been in talks with Countdown representatives to address concerns about the development, ahead of next week's resource consent hearing, and progress had been made, he said.

Some issues, such as parking and traffic impacts, ''still probably have to be addressed'', but he hoped they could be.

The group had put forward a list of conditions to mitigate concerns about the supermarket, should consent be granted.

• Next week's resource consent hearing will be held from March 11 to 13 at the Salvation Army building in Mosgiel.
