A crowd of about 80 people gathered in the fan zone yesterday evening to watch race 10, while others watched on from the surrounding bars.
Whistles and cheers grew more frequent as New Zealand secured an early lead on its Italian rivals.
Among the crowd was Louis Calder (11), of Dunedin, who was watching alongside his granddad David Cooper, of Waikouaiti.
While they were not huge fans of yacht racing, it had been great to watch the race and enjoy celebrating the win with others, Mr Cooper said.
New Zealand won the 36th America’s Cup 7 to 3 in the best-of-13 series.
