Hearing for objections over private investigator

The registrar for Private Investigators and Security Guards will hold a three-day hearing in Dunedin to hear the objections of 16 people opposed to the renewal of the licence for Dunedin private investi-gator Peter Gibbons.

Part of the annual licence renewal process for private investigators includes an opportunity for members of the public to object.

Renewals are done during January and February of each year and as long as an application is lodged in time, the private investigator can continue practising unless the registrar decides otherwise.

Registrar Gary Harrison will preside over the hearing, which will be held in a Dunedin court starting on September 29.

Steve McHugh, the manager of the occupational licensing unit at the Auckland District Court, said about 30 similar hearings were held a year, but it was unusual for there to be so many objectors.

It would not be clear until the hearing how many of the objectors would present submissions, he said.

It is understood several of the objectors were being investigated by Dunedin company Mainland Information Consultants.

The company is run by Mr Gibbons, a former Dunedin detective, on behalf of ACC's fraud unit.
