The first stage of the demolition project, which included knocking down the biggest building, has been completed and the next stage is under way.
"We have also started removing the old railway yard track and bringing in new track materials, such as concrete sleepers, for the future new railway yard," a KiwiRail spokesman said.
The Government announced in May last year $85 million of funding to build a new wagon assembly facility at Hillside. A new mechanical workshop, where up to 20 wagons can be worked on at a time, is part of the redevelopment.
