Hospice ends year with $115K surplus

A 6.5% rise in community fundraising meant the Otago Community Hospice ended the last financial year with a $114,982 surplus.

The organisation's annual report said donations, special events, grants and income from hospice shops meant the organisation's target of $2.3million in fundraising was met.

That was a sizeable contribution to the hospice's $6million total revenue, trust chairman Stuart McLachlan said.

The annual report noted demand for services had increased, with a 10% rise in patient numbers across Otago.

Of those patients, 92% reported being very satisfied with the services they had received.

The average number of people using the hospice service at any time was 205, three-quarters of whom remained at home rather than being admitted to the inpatient unit.

Of those admitted, the average length of stay was 9.2 days.

The next major development for Otago Community Hospice is the North Otago Hospice Hub, due to open by the middle of the year.
