Hygiene issues at Dunedin Pizza Huts

A Government investigation into Dunedin Pizza Huts found several hygiene issues, but no evidence of expiry date tampering.

In February, three employees at the franchise's two stores in the city resigned, alleging poor hygiene in the premises including expiry date tampering, serving food past its best-before date and broken equipment.

The Ministry for Primary Industries then began investigating the claims.

This week, ministry food compliance manager Melinda Sando said it had completed its investigation.

"Our inquiries identified some concerns with hygiene and food practices that needed action, specifically ensuring stored food is covered properly, improving cleaning practices and replacing worn or damaged equipment."

However, no evidence was found to support allegations of altering date marks, she said.

"MPI is satisfied that appropriate steps have been taken by Restaurant Brands NZ Ltd and store management to improve the hygiene and practices at both Pizza Hut North and South Dunedin so that both food businesses meet the requirements for production and sale of safe and suitable food."

The ministry took allegations seriously and encouraged food workers and the general public to report concerns to it directly to "enable an independent assessment and investigation if necessary".

The Otago Daily Times asked Pizza Hut owner Restaurant Brands yesterday for comment on the investigation, including whether management at the stores had changed since the investigation began.

The company declined to comment.

While the Ministry for Primary Industries pisses around with pizza hut we all eat from there with lack of good hygiene and machines dripping oil in our dough . I still would believe the staff that quit over some over funded Govt dept . I still cannot understand why our health is being kept in check by a govt dept instead of the DCC who we all pay extremely high rates to pay those in power there extremely high wages to keep our city in check . Why are the DCC not going around and checking on these businesses run from Auckland for large profit at any cost. Best thing to do bypass garbage and move on to other pizza shops there are plenty about

Epic fail.
There was photo evidence and statements from people who WORKED THERE.

I, along with many i know, won't be going back there until Pizza Hut get a new franchise owner for the Dunedin shops.

Would never eat there again even there complaint service needs work. new owner would b the way to go just going to keep going on otherwise in my eyes

On the Sunday night before the closure of the south dunedin store & before we had any idea that there were any hygiene concerns, we decided to pizza for tea from sth dunedin.
After eating our pizzas my Husband commented he had abit of a 'funny tummy' & I thought at the time that my pizza tasted 'very different'. We won't get pizza again, least not for a while - until we know that there are changes made.
I hope there is a change of management & that everyone working on site is made aware of food hygiene & the importance of it.
