The visitor centre reopened yesterday in its new Civic Centre home, and while some signs and interior fittings were still to be installed, manager Louise van de Vlierd said the new site would make it ''so much more visible''.
The move is the third in six years for the centre. i-Site had a temporary move to the Dunedin Community Gallery from the Municipal Chambers in 2009, when the chambers, the Dunedin Centre and Town Hall were redeveloped.
In 2011, it moved to a site next door to the community gallery in Princes St.
The Dunedin City Council announced the move back to the Octagon in April, and the partnership with Doc was born after the department approached the council last year.
The centre is designed to be a one-stop shop for visitors, cruise ship guests and also locals looking to get out and about locally and further afield.
Ms van de Vlierd the council had a $100,000 budget for the move.
The centre would have eight full-time council workers, and one full-time Doc worker.
The hours would be 8.30am to 5.30pm on weekdays, although that could extend, if necessary, to 6pm, and 8.45am to 5.30pm on weekends.
Doc would provide track information, Great Walk information and bookings, hut tickets and passes, topographic and national park maps, and other merchandise.
