Icy mornings expected around much of province

Otago  residents are being urged to be wary of ice on roads for the next few days, as morning temperatures drop below zero.

Around 7am today the Met Service website showed Dunedin Airport with a temperature of -0.6degC.

Alexandra aerodrome was showing -2.8degC, while the coolest place to be was a little further north at Tekapo, which was on -5-8degC.

Yesterday, MetService meteorologist Brian Mercer said Central Otago would be hardest hit over the coming days, with temperatures dropping as low as -2degC.

''There will probably be quite frosty mornings, so people need to watch out for that on their way to work.

''It will be like that until Wednesday or so.''

Many Otago residents will be welcoming the clearer, sunnier days following the wet and miserable conditions which plagued the region for much of Queen's Birthday weekend.

Mr Mercer said the strong southerly flow which had drifted over the southern region during the past few days would weaken and by tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday, the weather should be relatively fine and temperatures could reach 11degC or 12degC.

However, he said to make the most of it. Next weekend was forecast to be wet again.

``The next significant rain that we are expecting will probably come late on Friday.

``There's a little bit of light relief until the weekend rolls around again. Unfortunately, it's one of those patterns we can't avoid.''
