Inner-city residents parking back on agenda

The Dunedin City Council is set to take another look at residents' parking in the inner city, following complaints.

The new residents' parking policy was approved in July last year, at the same time the parking strategy for the wider city was approved.

Transportation planning manager Don Hill said, at the time, residents could apply for two spaces for $150 a year, less the number of off-street parks they had.

The council would try to link the parks more closely to residents, as the system had been abused, including by landlords who lived away from the central city offering parks for $20 a week.

When the policy was introduced last November, 29 permit holders lost their parking bays.

A report from Mr Hill to next Monday's planning and environment committee said when the parking strategy was implemented this year, "the matter of the loss of residents' parking privileges was again raised both by those who had lost spaces, and some who previously did not have residents' parking and would like to have the privilege".

Deputy mayor Syd Brown said yesterday a variety of issues had come up since the policy was introduced, including residents' cars being registered to their park, meaning sick family members, health-care workers or visiting tradesmen could not use them.

Some of the rules appeared too restrictive and should be reconsidered.

Mr Hill recommended the council set up a subcommittee to consider the issues, and report by next March.
