KiwiRail  has reminded drivers to stop, look and listen before crossing train tracks, following the collision of a train and truck near Mosgiel yesterday morning.

The collision between a freight train, which was travelling from Dunedin to Invercargill, and a Johnson Earthworks truck happened about 10.45am.

A police spokeswoman said the incident occurred on a private level crossing at the intersection of Cemetery Rd and Gladstone Rd South, in East Taieri.

A photographer who was at the scene said the train came to a halt about 500m south of the accident.

No-one was injured but police notified St John as a precaution.

KiwiRail acting South Island operations general manager Mark Heissenbuttel had a message for drivers following the collision.

"This is a timely reminder for drivers to take care at level crossings and to obey the warning signs in place."

He said collisions such as that incident were upsetting for train staff.

"In line with our standard practice, the driver has been relieved of their duties and will be supported by KiwiRail."

A damaged car was also at the scene, but police had no information about whether it was involved in the crash.
