There was no way Aji Jose wanted to slip up on his way to work yesterday.

The Montecillo Veterans Home and Hospital nurse almost came a cropper as he walked down his snow-covered Wakari driveway, so he was thankful he had an all-weather four-wheel drive taxi ready to take him across town.

The snow and icy weather which descended upon Dunedin had left Mr Jose stranded without his own transport, after he was forced to leave his car at work on Sunday evening because of the treacherous driving conditions.

Lucky for Mr Jose, there were about 30 members of the Land Rover Owners Club Otago, who volunteered their vehicles to transport district health board workers around the snow-struck city.

Land Rover enthusiast Bob Holmes said he had driven more than 200km to help workers into town from the hill suburbs, since Sunday's snowstorm struck.

"Yeah, I reckon he's pretty good," Mr Jose said of the timely pick-up from Mr Holmes.

"I wouldn't have been able to get into work without him."

Red Cross volunteer programme co-ordinator Richard Marlow said the 4WD group provided an invaluable service to the DHB and its many patients.
