Man bashed in central Dunedin

A 38-year-old man received a broken nose and teeth when he was attacked by a man who approached him on the intersection of Dowling and Princes Sts.

The alleged offender was one of a group of four men who approached the victim and was described to police as a male Maori, aged 17 or 18, with short dark hair, a tooth missing and a scar on his neck.

The attack happened about 3.40am on Sunday.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact police.

• A conservative estimate of the damage caused by vandals at Larnach Castle at the weekend had reached $3000, Senior Constable Lox Kellas, of Portobello, said.

Lighting, a hydraulic gate, a marble urn and a tree were damaged in the attack.

Police planned to review security-camera footage, he said.

• An allegedly drunk driver was arrested about 11pm on Saturday when the car he was driving failed to take a corner and crashed into a barrier before colliding with a parked car near the intersection of Mailer and Lawrence Sts in Mornington, Dunedin.

The man had a breath-alcohol level of 951mcg, more than twice the legal limit, police said.

•Campus Watch called police at 3.12am yesterday when three men were seen climbing a 20m-high tower crane on the construction site of the new psychology building on the University of Otago campus in Dunedin. The men had scaled a 2m-high wall to gain access to the site.

Two had run off by the time Campus Watch staff arrived.

One man, not a student, was arrested and charged with unlawfully being on a property.

• A man and his girlfriend were arrested at Wobbly's Bar and Restaurant in Victoria Rd in Dunedin on Sunday.

The disruptive man was being arrested when his girlfriend punched one of two police officers in the face about 12.20am, police said.

• A woman who woke at 4.17am on Sunday and started screaming when she saw an unknown male standing in the doorway of the bedroom, is likely to have interrupted a burglary in progress, police say.

The male ran off when the woman's partner gave chase. The kitchen door of the Ascot St house was open and some tobacco was taken.

The male victim's car was also broken into and some CDs stolen, police said.
