Man finds himself in tight spot

A man had to be pulled from a wall by firefighters in Dunedin after becoming stuck while trying to take a shortcut home.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown said the man, aged in his late teens or early 20s, found himself in a tight spot while taking the shortcut between George St and Great King St about 12.30am today.

The Fire Service was called to assist police with the man thought to be intoxicated.

Senior Station Officer Mark Leonard said he was freed using a line tied in a "sewer knot" that goes under both arms.

"It's the way to vertically raise someone.''

One appliance attended and was at the job for 15 minutes.

"It's just a good thing he didn't fall head first,'' he said.

Snr Sgt Brown said the man was unhurt and "reasonably appreciative'' of being freed.
