The Otago Regional Council says it has received ‘‘many complaints’’ about bad odour in the Abbotsford area and is investigating the cause.

The Otago Daily Times last week reported some in the community were complaining about an ongoing stench emanating from the Keep it Clean rendering plant.

Several residents living near  the factory on the hill above Burnside, across from Green Island, said it was an "unbearable'' stink.

This followed an article earlier in May about issues the public had with a plant in North Taieri. Both are owned by the Waitoa-based Wallace Group.

Kenmure resident Ian Stewart said he was driving down Kaikorai Valley Rd recently and "dry retching'' at the smell. It sometimes reached inside his property when the wind was blowing in a certain direction.

"I feel for the people in Green Island and Concord. A couple of times I've gone outside and gone back inside because of it."

Regional council environmental services manager Martin King said the complaints were regarding smells from ‘‘several different factories’’.

Wallace Group chief executive Graham Shortland said the company was spending "large sums of money'' addressing odour issues at both plants.
