Marine reserve tension

Ministries plan to present recommendations for South Island marine protection areas by the end of next month, but Otago Conservation Board members have expressed frustration at the lengthy process.

At its Dunedin meeting yesterday, the board discussed the progress of the South-East Marine Protection Forum recommendations.

After more than three years the forum released two recommendations to the Department of Conservation and Ministry for Primary Industries in February.

They outlined which areas it thought should be protected, and to what extent, from Timaru to Waipapa Point in Southland.

Board members Bruce Jefferies said he felt the ``frustration'' of others of nothing happening with the recommendations.

``Four months and nothing ... How long does it take?''

Board chairman Pat Garden said it was important there was sufficient scope in the no-take areas.

Doc coastal Otago operations manager Annie Wallace said the ministries were working to provide collective advice to ministers regarding the options.

They aimed to do this by the end of August, she said.

The forum released two options as no consensus could be reached between conservationists and scientists on one side and commercial fisheries on the other.
