Dunedin's main shopping street was almost at bursting point.
There were so many people at the George Street Market on Saturday that it was hard to move through the crowds while stopping to do a spot of shopping, having a bite to eat or pausing to watch entertainers.
About 250 stalls — featuring crafts, jewellery, apparel, cosmetics, decor and art — lined George St from the Octagon to Frederick St.
Two cruise ships, Celebrity Edge and Viking Orion, deposited about 3000 passengers into Dunedin — swelling the crowds.
It was sheepskin slipper-maker and seller Robyn Hawkesby’s second year at the market.
While the overseas visitors were not the best customers — being sceptical the brightly-coloured slippers were authentic — she made many sales to University of Otago students, she said.
Her slipper-making journey began about 50 years ago when she was a student and her passion for it had never wavered, she said.
While it was more of a hobby to keep busy in the evenings, doing the odd market, when she was up for it, suited her ‘‘just fine’’, she said.
Enterprise Dunedin destination manager Teresa Fogarty said the market was fast becoming one of the city’s standout events and had national and international appeal.
The weather played ball and stallholders were delighted by the day, reporting the market was well organised, while musical performances on the acoustic and live stages showcased local talent.
