Mayor 'still working' on second apology

Dunedin Mayor Peter Chin is refusing to say if a second apology has been received from Cr Teresa Stevenson.

It has now been more than a month since Cr Stevenson was censured for breaching the council's code of conduct and standing orders, and asked to make an appropriate apology to the council.

Her first attempt at an apology, sent to Mr Chin on May 15, was rejected as "not acceptable" by Mr Chin.

Asked yesterday if a second apology had been received, Mr Chin said only that he was "still working on it".

Asked what that meant, he replied: "Whatever you want."

"When I have got to the stage of receiving the apology . . . you will be aware of it and the details of it will be released to you," he added.

Mr Chin's comments came after he made no mention of Cr Stevenson's first apology attempt when initially asked if one had been received last month.

Once it was confirmed an apology had been sent, Mr Chin said it had not been received in the acceptable form, "therefore, as far as I'm concerned, I haven't received it".

The order for Cr Stevenson to apologise came after it was alleged she revealed details of a confidential letter regarding the Forsyth Barr Stadium to the Otago Daily Times in January.

Cr Stevenson could not be reached for comment yesterday.
