For the past four years, the Dunedin man has been making sure pupils at North East Valley Normal School have bikes to hoon around on every Friday.
It started when he learned about the school’s weekly "wheels day", when children can bring along their bike, scooter, or other wheeled transport on a Friday and enjoy them at the school during their lunch break.
"It seemed to me like a progressive sort of set-up," he said.
Initially, he offered to help out with fixing bikes if there were any maintenance issues.
"Then I realised not all the kids had bikes, so some of them weren’t able to participate."
A lot of bikes were given by members of the public to the Valley Community Workspace in Allen St, where Mr McDonald works from, so he started taking them over to the school for the pupils to use.
"Any of the kids who didn’t have a bike could just pick one up and ride it."
Mr McDonald said he was passionate about bikes, both as a form of entertainment and transport.
He was keen to see North Rd become safer for children biking to school, possibly with a speed limit change.
