More than 500 people graduated from Otago Polytechnic yesterday, 250 of them in person, during a lively ceremony at the Dunedin Town Hall.

About 260, including some who undertook distance-taught courses, graduated in absentia.

The number of graduands was up significantly on the equivalent ceremony in March last year, when 450 graduated, 245 of them in person.

In December last year, 790 people graduated at the polytechnic's largest graduation ceremony.

Among those taking part in yesterday's ceremony were graduands in occupational therapy, nursing and veterinary nursing, and others from the School of Architecture, Building and Engineering.

Graduates were addressed by Andrew Holmes, project director, large projects, at Hawkins Construction, the main contractors for the Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin and the Otago Corrections Facility at Milton.
