Event manager Xanthe Naylor said 3000 to 4000 people were expected across two sessions last night.
A still and clear evening made for fantastic conditions, she said.
She hoped the event made people feel connected during the darkest time of winter and ‘‘inspired by light and magic’’.
The carnival, with the theme ‘‘a Rustle in the Night’’, featured roving acts, musicians, aerial displays which incorporated Māori storytelling and a performance from First Church’s Pasifika congregation, she said.
The carnival will be held again tonight.
