Moves are being made to continue some of the work of the now-defunct Carers' Society Otago, and to later establish a new body to support home carers.

Dunedin Multi-Ethnic Council immediate past-president Paul Gourlie is keen to help, after society members voted at a special meeting this week to wind up because of funding woes, after earlier funding cuts.

At a meeting on Thursday evening, the council committee had supported the idea of holding a meeting at Community House in about a month to consider setting up a new body, he said.

The council had a spare room and cellphone available, and he was also keen that carers continue to use a network of fellow carers, which had previously been available through the society.

Leslie Groves facility manager Max Reid said he was keen to attend the proposed meeting and would help establish a new body after a review of the society.

Considerable interest had recently been shown in continuing some of the society's work, and momentum should be maintained, he said.
