When you are accepted to study for a master's degree in three of the world's top music schools, how do you pick one? For Dunedin viola player Helen Bevin, the job prospects tipped her in favour of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.

"At the moment, it has the top viola department in London. And the prospects of getting work in a top orchestra once I graduate are very high."

The 22-year-old was also accepted to study viola at the Royal College of Music and the Trinity College of Music in London after auditions in December last year.

Miss Bevin began playing violin at age 8 and moved on to viola when she was 12 because she enjoyed its mellow tone.

Since then, she has been principal violist in the 2008 and 2009 National Youth Orchestra and Australian National Music Camp orchestra, won the 2008 New Zealand School of Music Concerto Competition, won the 2008 Royal Over-Seas League Scholarship which allowed her to perform in London, and graduated with a music degree from Victoria University in Wellington.

She regularly plays for the Vector Wellington Orchestra, the Southern Sinfonia, and plays casually for the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

Despite her success in New Zealand, Miss Bevin said it was time to explore opportunities offshore.

"It's exciting. 'm very ready to go overseas. There is a lot to do in New Zealand, but now I feel like I've exhausted most of the opportunities.

"I need to go overseas to further my career now."

Once she had graduated, Miss Bevin hoped to freelance in orchestras in Europe for a while.

But, ultimately, she hoped to get a job back in New Zealand playing with the NZSO.

"That would make Mum happy. She's sad to see me go."

Miss Bevin departs for London on July 10, and will give a farewell concert at St Hilda's Collegiate on June 26 at 2pm.
