Give me some skin — it’s high fives all round as a Dunedin dermal therapist brings home a national award.

Skin Health Studio owner Jemma Moran won New Zealand Therapist of the Year 2017-18 award in Wellington last month.

‘‘I was shocked,’’ Mrs Moran said.

To be in contention, candidates had to submit skin case studies to the New Zealand Association of Registered Beauty Professionals

The three case studies she lodged focused on acne, eczema and pigmentation.

The studies included before and after photos of the ‘‘skin work’’ she had done for clients.

It was the first time she had entered the awards.

She believed a reason for her win was ‘‘ticking all the boxes’’ in the care of her clients externally and internally, including dietary advice and information on how certain foods affected the skin.

Her ‘‘holistic’’ philosophy included maintaining regular contact with clients.

‘‘When you are dealing with a skin condition, you’ve got to deal with them weekly.’’

Mrs Moran (34) was born and raised in Dunedin and worked in a skin clinic in London for seven years before opening her ‘‘bespoke’’ business in St Clair about five years ago.

She focused solely on her clients’ skin, unlike many therapists who also did waxing and nails.

Most of the work was related to anti-ageing and skin disorders.

Her clients ranged from babies with eczema to 80-year-olds with skin issues, she said.
