Natural look for beach

A development plan for Te Rauone beach appears to incorporate the "natural'' feel the community wants.

At a drop-in session at Otakou Marae last night the public was presented with the Dunedin City Council's draft plans for the reserve, about 2km from Taiaroa Head.

They will form part of a joint multimillion-dollar project with Port Otago which will also include three large rock groynes.

The project, announced in May, is in reaction to sand loss and facilities becoming run down.

The plans show plantings, barbecue facilities, playground extensions and walkways.

They were created after community consultation.

Te Rauone Beach Coast Care Committee member Des Smith said the plans showed what the public asked for.

"The community did not want anything flash. It's about keeping it quite natural.''

Otago Peninsula Community Board chairman Paul Pope said there were still details which needed to be tweaked.

"What they've done with the design has captured a lot of the things in the original brief which were asked for.''

It was crucial now to meld the reserve plans with Port Otago's sand restoration efforts, he said.

The council will use feedback from yesterday's session to inform the final plan.
