Intersection death 'a matter of time'

It is not a matter of if, but when someone is killed at a Dunedin intersection  where a crash occurred yesterday, a neighbour says.

Emergency services were called to a two-car crash at the intersection of Mulford and Emerson Sts in Concord about 1pm.

A St John spokesman said one person was taken to Dunedin Hospital by ambulance with minor injuries.

Mulford St resident Craig White said there had already been two "near misses" at the intersection yesterday before the crash.

"People just go straight through the intersection.

"It is not a case of if, but when someone’s going to get hit badly and killed."

Mr White was particularly worried about motorists’ disregard for the intersection because many children crossed it on their way to and from school each day.

He did not witness yesterday’s crash, but heard a loud "bang".

"I’ve had to deal with the aftermath of a few of them."

He hoped by speaking out the council would make a change to road signs and markings at the intersection.

A Dunedin City Council spokeswoman said the council was always concerned when there was an accident.

"When we have more information we will assess if any work or additional safety measures are needed."
